This evening I went to hear Owen Jones talk about his book, Chavs, the demonization of the working class and participate in the discussion that followed. David Skelton finds this a very readable book about the demonisation of our working class, but suggests that it fails to address the big issues around job creation and welfare reform. Owen Jones' debut publication Chavs: The Demonization of The Working Class, recently released by Verso, is far more than the sociological study of the so-called British “underclass” that one might expect. My first introduction to Owen Jones was with his appearances on the infamous BBC2's Newsnight were David Starkey declared "whites have become black".
